Once again this year, Abbey of Montmajour is hosting two photography exhibitions as part of the Rencontres d'Arles festival.

In the refectory, we invite you to discover the exhibition "50 ans dans l'oeil de Libé" (50 years in the eye of Libé), presented on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the newspaper Libération.
In the chapter house, come and observe the work of photographer Tan Chui Mui, winner of the Jimei Festival 2022 with the exhibition "Simplement parce que vous avez appuyé sur l'obturateur?" (Just because you pressed the shutter?).

50 years in the eye of Libé

This exhibition retraces 50 years of photojournalism with the newspaper Libération. All the photos presented were commissioned and published by Libération, since the newspaper's birth in 1973.

Chosen from an abundant output, they retrace more than half a century of history, conflicts and political conquests... Both intimate and collective, they invite us to take a stroll through the history of France, Europe and the world, told through the eye of Libé. From decade to decade, we dive into each era, from the 1970s to the present day.

Just because you pressed the shutter?

Jimei Festival winnerTan Chui Mui invites us to question the question of image ownership: who has the rights to an image when you've "simply" pressed a button?

For the exhibition curator, photography is the art of creating images. She invites us to turn our attention to non-traditional photographers, to present the work of image-makers who broaden our understanding of contemporary photography. Director Tan Chui Mui' s images are inseparable from her experience, literature and daily observations of life.
How does she make her images? Within the exhibition, a text is an image, a film is an image, and the exhibition itself is an image. Yet Tan Chui Mui never pressed the shutter to obtain these images...
